21 November
Ah Gong Ah Ma Day

The 2004 fundraising committee of Lions Home for the Elders launched its inaugural fundraising project - Ah Gong Ah Ma Day on 21 November 2004.

Specially designed chopsticks were on sale islandwide during this event which was in celebration with the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports' Senior Citizens' Week. These chopsticks come in six colourful and unique designs depicting the 3 different generations of family - Ah Gong, Ah Ma, Daddy, Mummy, Junior and Missy.

This initiative also serves to support the government's call for better family ties and values. This is what Lions Home hopes to raise awareness on - the importance of family kinship and the fulfilment of family to our lives.

Hailing back to the olden times, using chopsticks was an ancient way of eating together in a family. In the Chinese tradition, a pair of chopsticks is one of the most significant cutleries invented and the story of binding chopsticks together bring unity and strength. In the same way, closely knitted families share the closeness and bond between different generations through having meals together, which is very much alive in the Asian culture. This tradition is still alive to encourage mutual respect and engender togetherness and love for each other.

Special thanks to all our volunteers for their hard work and support in assisting Lions Home to make Ah Gong Ah Ma Day 2004 a success!

As part of Lions Home's efforts to continuously raise funds for its hefty operating costs per annum, the Committee has decided to make this refreshing initiative an annual project and significant icon of Lions Home. Lions Home is certainly committed to ensure all our elderly residents get only the best in nursing and healthcare at our Home.

Think of chopsticks and you will be reminded of Lions Home where you can help to spread your love and respect for the elderly. To bring cheers and comfort to our underprivileged elderly sick in the community, you can help to buy a pair of chopsticks at S$2.00 each!

If you would like to buy or help us to sell the chopsticks, please contact Pauline Chua at 63599174 or email us at infocomm@lionshome.org.sg.
